Pharmacist Michael Kani has released a new guide designed to help candidates master the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada qualifying exam. The Ultimate PEBC Success Guide argues that many test-takers fail not because they lack knowledge, but because they misunderstand the test’s purpose. Kani, a pharmacy manager in Calgary, developed the resource after watching capable international pharmacy graduates struggle repeatedly.
Shifting focus from memorization to clinical judgment
According to Kani, the focus of the PEBC has shifted from testing knowledge recall to evaluating clinical judgment, prioritization and decision-making under pressure in a Canadian practice context. He says candidates often prepare for the exam like a memorization test, which it is not. The guide prioritizes how to think through the exam rather than just content. It teaches test-takers how to approach vignettes, prioritize effectively and manage time under pressure.
“What pushed me to finally do it was seeing really capable IPG candidates fail multiple times, not because they lacked knowledge, but because they were preparing for it like a memorization exam, which it isn’t,” says Kani. He notes that there isn’t really another resource that approaches the exam this way.
The book breaks down how the exam functions in practice. It highlights where candidates commonly lose marks and offers strategies for making efficient, risk-based decisions. Kani chose to self-publish the guide to maintain full control over the content and direction. He says the actual writing took a few focused months to complete.

Early reception and practical application
Kani says he has been thinking about developing this guide for many years. He has worked with many international pharmacy graduates preparing for their PEBC exams. While the guide only launched a few weeks ago, the response has been encouraging.
“Candidates, especially those who have previously written the exam, have said it’s already changing how they’re thinking about their preparation,” Kani adds. The guide aims to help candidates shift from memorization to applying their knowledge in a way that aligns with how the exam is structured.
It is worth noting that this approach reflects a broader trend in professional licensing exams, which increasingly prioritize situational reasoning over static fact retention. Many standardized tests have moved away from rote learning to assess how professionals handle ambiguity and time constraints. Kani’s guide focuses on this specific shift, offering a targeted strategy for a niche but critical segment of the healthcare workforce.
